The Evolution of Fife & Drum Music

The last living link between African rhythm, early blues, and American roots — carried forward by the granddaughter of Otha Turner.

01

The Show

Driving bass drums. Piercing cane-fife melodies. A crowd that cannot stay still.

The Rising Stars carry forward the rare North Mississippi fife and drum tradition — a sound older than the blues itself, built on hand-carved cane fifes and marching drums that trace straight back to West Africa. It is one of the most endangered musical traditions in America, and one of the most electrifying live.

Their performances mix century-old hill-country songs with fresh, funky beats — folding in blues, R&B, hip-hop, dance, and gospel until the young and old are on their feet together.

The Lineage

Sharde Thomas-Mallory and Chris Mallory

Sharde Thomas-Mallory has led fife and drum bands since she was a girl playing alongside her grandfather, the legendary Otha Turner. In 2003 she founded the Rising Stars to carry his legacy forward.

Alongside her, Chris Mallory drives the band on drums and produces its records. Together, the husband-and-wife duo from Coldwater, Mississippi have grown the Rising Stars into a worldwide brand and a monumental force in blues and roots history.

"Feeding the world what they never knew they needed — drums and fife in the form of blues, R&B, hip-hop, dance, and gospel."
